My three most FAQs


1. What do you think about when you run? 

Absolutely nothing

It’s fantastic and why I fell in love with the sport. During the regular hours of the day  my mind is a tornado of chaos and to-do lists, but when I run I’m zoned out. 

The easiest way to describe my state of mind when running is comparing it to yoga, and if you aren’t a yogi than I apologize for not having a better analogy.

At the end of a yoga practice, you lay in a position called savasana, or corpse pose. It’s the pose of total relaxation. In savasana, one meditates and absorbs all of the good that he or she did to the body during the yoga practice. This meditation is a time where you just exist rather than think about everything else going on in your life. And for me, I reach this state of mind most easily on runs, especially long ones. 

To be honest, it’s why I never run with other people. If you had the opportunity to not think about your bills, family problems, work stress, or even formulate sentences to another human being… and just be, would you give that up? No way. 

I’m not always in this state of calmness, but it’s easier to reach the more often I run. Some days all I can think about is how annoying it is that I “had” to run today and I couldn’t skip a day because I’m in training. Or how cold it is (that thought is occurring more and more often as the weeks go by). 

But, more often than not, I’m in my own world during a run. 

2. What made you start running half marathons? 

My long distance running began when my boyfriend left for bootcamp in October of 2011.

I had always loved running, but spent my time dancing through high school and the beginning of my college career (shout out to Phunktions Hip Hop Crew). Once my boyfriend left, I had more time to spend in the gym, and found myself returning to the treadmill time and time again. As I got more conditioned, I stared reaching the point where my time running meant completely clearing my mind. 

I can’t really grasp how I logged so many miles on a treadmill…  there would have to be a blizzard for you to find me running more than 2 miles on a machine now. I blame my early running insanity on the cold weather season, and newbie status at long distance running. But anyways, I was building up my mileage every week. 

I still remember feverishly writing a letter to my boyfriend about how I ran five miles straight, and how proud of myself I was. That’s when something clicked. Between the zoned out feeling I got while running, and the pride I felt when accomplishing goals I set for myself, I knew I wanted to sign up for a race. And a half marathon sounded challenging, yet reachable. 

I officially decided to run my first half marathon as my New Year’s Resolution for 2012. 

3. Don’t you get bored? 

Uhm… of course. 

You could LOVE your job with all your heart, but try and tell me you don’t get bored with the same old daily procedures.

Do you quit your job? Nope.


I’m not going to sit here and pretend like running doesn’t get repetitive. There are only so many trails and times of day to run. It gets monotonous.

But I’m not about to throw in my running shoes and all the time, energy, and hard work I’ve put into getting where I am today because I get bored. 

That’s why I enjoy traveling, packing my running shoes, and having the opportunity to run somewhere besides my worn in trails at school. That’s why I run random 5Ks, 10Ks, and any other race I can sign up for. That’s why I give myself new challenges, such as running without music.

Just like anything else, I have to take the steps to keep myself engaged, interested, and motivated. I just happen to find running worth the extra effort.
